Strengthening Your Garage Door When hurricane season is in full swing, there is an extensive list of tasks to best prepare yourself and your home. Our homes, pools, and outdoor living areas need extra attention during this time of year- and one spot often gets overlooked: the garage door. Garage doors can be a weak point of a home when a storm hits. They are one of the largest openings of a home that can easily become susceptible to intense wind damage. If this occurs, a home’s roof and walls can experience extensive damage due to the added pressure of the high winds. Here are a few ways to strengthen your garage door this hurricane season:
1. Install Wind-Rated Garage Doors

An effective solution is to replace standard garage doors with hurricane-rated models. These doors are:

  • Designed to meet Florida’s building code requirements (especially in high-risk hurricane zones)

  • Reinforced with steel, heavy-duty tracks and additional bracing

  • Able to withstand wind speeds of up to 150+ mph.

Many homeowners opt for these when upgrading or replacing older doors, as they also improve home value and may lower insurance premiums.

2. Add Garage Door Bracing Kits

If you’re not ready to invest in a full replacement, bracing kits are a popular alternative option. These kits include vertical and/or horizontal supports that attach to the existing garage door and anchor it to the floor and ceiling.

They’re a DIY-friendly, cost-effective solution that can significantly increase wind resistance.

3. Sealing and Weatherproofing

While it won’t prevent wind blow-ins. Sealing your garage door improves protection against flooding, rain leaks, and flying debris. Weather seals and bottom seals also help keep wind-driven water out, especially in flood-prone areas.

4. Reinforce Tracks and Hardware

A way to go beyond bracing is by upgrading the entire garage door system:

  • Heavy-duty rollers, hinges, and tracks can make a big difference in how a door performs under pressure.

  • Track reinforcement kits help prevent the door from buckling or coming off its rails during a storm.

Before embarking on any of these garage-strengthening methods;

  • Always check local building codes—especially if you live in a High-risk Hurricane Zone

  • Consult licensed contractors for installations or upgrades for proper completion.

  • Don’t wait until a storm is forecasted—prepare your garage door before it’s too late.
