May is National BBQ Month- which means it’s time to fire up the grill! It’s the perfect month to invite friends and family over for a delicious smoky dinner. While grilling is a beloved form of cooking, it also comes with risks if proper precautions aren’t taken. Whether you’re a seasoned grill master or just getting started, keeping safety top of mind ensures your BBQ stays memorable for all the right reasons.
Before you light the grill, choosing a location matters. Always place your grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area, at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, or hanging branches. Never grill indoors or in enclosed spaces like garages—this can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
Make sure your grill is stable and positioned on a flat surface. A wobbly grill can tip over, leading to burns or fires.
One of the leading causes of grill fires is grease buildup. Be sure to give your grill a thorough scrub after each use to remove leftover grease and food. Along with cleaning, make sure to check and empty the drip pan to prevent flare-ups.
If you’re using a gas grill, take a moment to inspect it before lighting. Check hoses for cracks, brittleness, or leaks. A simple way to test for leaks is to apply a soap and water solution to the hose. If bubbles form when the gas is on, you’ve got a leak that needs fixing before your next use.
Before lighting your grill, always open the lid first to prevent gas buildup. If the flame goes out, turn off the gas and wait a few minutes before relighting.
For charcoal grills, use only approved starter fluids—never gasoline or other flammable liquids. And once the fire is going, don’t add more fluid, as it can cause sudden flare-ups.
Always have a fire extinguisher, a bucket of sand, or a garden hose within reach. In case of a small grease fire, never use water—it can spread the flames. Instead, smother the fire by closing the grill lid or using baking soda.
Grills can get extremely hot, and accidents can happen quickly. Establish a “safe zone” of at least three feet around the grill and make sure children and pets stay outside of it.
Summer nights are all about good food, great company, and enjoying the outdoors. By following these simple grill safety tips, you can enjoy your outdoor dinners worry-free. Your perfect BBQ starts with preparation and ends with peace of mind.
