How to Make the Holidays Safer for Pets

The holiday cheer is in full swing, and our pets are right by our sides through it all! While we are enjoying the joy of the season, it’s important to keep our pets in mind and be aware of their needs. Unfortunately, holiday disasters can come true, especially with our furry friends. Keep these tips in mind to make sure your celebrations stay merry & bright for all!  

1. Keep Food Out of Reach

One of the easiest ways for pets to harm themselves is by getting into our food. During the holiday parties, it’s especially easy for them to access lingering food while no one’s looking. Be sure to keep food out of their reach, especially desserts. Remind your guests to do the same while celebrating in your home.  

2. Secure your Christmas Trees

Pets are always curious when the large evergreen trees enter their space. They may try to touch or bump into them to do some inspecting. Make sure your trees are solid and secure in their spots to avoid a catastrophic fall!  

3. Create a Safe Space

When hosting, a loud and crowded home can be overwhelming for pets. Be sure to create a safe space for them, like a designated area, where they can go to relax and escape the chaos when necessary. Fill it with their favorite bed and toys for them to feel comfortable.  

4. Keep Away from Lit Candles

Candles are a beautiful accent to set the ambiance for the holiday season, but can quickly become dangerous when pets are involved. Never leave your pets alone in a room or area with lit and unattended candles. Keep them out of their reach in any part of your home.  

5. Rearrange Holiday Plants

Many seasonal plants are poisonous if consumed or nibbled on by animals and can lead to serious emergencies. Some include holly, ivy, mistletoe, and poinsettias. If you are going to use these plants during the season, keep them far out of reach from your pets. Remind your friends and family to do the same in their homes.   Pets can bring extra joy to the holiday season, and we want it to stay that way!
