How to Have a GREEN Christmas Household waste increases by approximately 25% between Thanksgiving & New Year’s Day. How is this possible? Holiday wrapping materials, Christmas cards, food waste, shopping bags, etc. These things are all part of the holiday magic, but there are ways to be mindful of our waste and focus on staying green during the holidays. Let’s recall “reduce, reuse, and recycle”!
  1. Use reusable shopping bags
One of the easiest ways to reduce personal waste is by using reusable shopping bags. Don’t we all have that pile of them somewhere in our homes? Stock up your vehicles with a handful so that they are always available when you’re out shopping this season. Most stores offer them at checkout as well for a small price. This one act can reduce thousands of plastic bags over time. Encourage your family & friends to do the same. Landfills will thank you!
  1. Consider sending eCards
Family Christmas/holiday cards are always exciting to receive in the mail and hang on our refrigerators. The joy comes from seeing friends and family, especially those we haven’t seen in a while. This year, consider sending eCards instead! Your recipients will still get to see your lovely photos without the waste of throwing them away at the end of the season. This option reduces paper waste and requires no delivery vehicle. If you decide to stick with paper cards, consider recycled options!
  1. Reduce food waste
We all know and love this time of year when our favorite dishes and treats await. Tons of food and goodies will be cooked and baked for our holiday parties. If you’re cooking this year, be extra mindful of the amount of food you’re making. Obtain an exact headcount of those who will be eating and try to not overdo it. If you end up with extra food that will go to waste, consider donating to a local food bank for it to still be enjoyed!
  1. Use LED lights & only use at night
LED lights have become popular in the last decade. They use about 80% less energy than regular ones and last longer. Make the switch this holiday season! And be sure to turn them off during the day to save even more energy.
  1. Give GREEN gifts
Our shopping sprees can end up largely contributing to the holiday waste. It’s difficult to dodge the new and shiny gifts staring at us at each store, but this year, consider getting more creative. The gift of experience is a great option. Consider gifting your loved ones with an experience they would cherish forever with long lasting memories! Game tickets, dinner dates, concerts, are just the beginning of ideas.     It’s the best time of the year, and we can make it even better by staying GREEN this Christmas! Try your best to keep these tips in mind this season. We can all make a difference right from our own homes.   As always, we are here for you, Florida!
