You are probably familiar with the infamous and historic Kennedy Space Center site, located on Cape Canaveral, Florida. It is an iconic US site for the United States space exploration program. Tons of astronauts have been launched into orbit from their launch pads since 1961. Let’s learn a bit more about the history of Florida’s journey to space.
July 29, 1958– The National Aeronautics and Space Administration was established when President Dwight signed the bill.
October 1, 1958– NASA began taking steps towards civilian research regarding space flight and aeronautics.
May 25, 1961– President John F. Kennedy announced his goal of sending an American to the moon within that current decade.
September 1, 1961- NASA requested funding to acquire enough land (80,000 acres) to support the Apollo Lunar Landing program, which later became the Kennedy Space Center.
July 1963– The Vehicle Assembly Building construction began. In the same year, the center was officially designated as the Kennedy Space Center.
May 26, 1965– The Kennedy Space Center’s Headquarters building was being used for all spaceport activities.
October 11, 1968– NASA astronauts blast off from Cape Kennedy for the first manned Apollo test flight on Apollo 7.
December 21, 1968– William Anders, Jim Lovell, & Frank Borman blast off on the Apollo 8 mission. This was the first manned launch from the Kennedy Space Center and the first human expedition beyond Earth’s orbit!
July 16, 1999– Apollo 11 was launched from Cape Kennedy.
