Storm-Ready Kids: Five Essential Steps to Prepare Kids for Hurricanes

Hurricane season can be a scary time, especially for the little ones. It can be particularly challenging to comfort children and make them feel safe. Here are some helpful tips to make your kids feel more at ease during a hurricane and some ideas on what to pack in case you need to leave your home:

1. Involve your children in evacuation plans:

Making and reviewing plans during hurricane season is essential. Allow your children to be part of these preparations and let them decide what items to bring in case of evacuation. They should also be aware of the details of the evacuation, such as where they would go and what they would be doing.

2. Stay Up-To-Date

Keep an eye on the news, but be mindful of what they’re showing. We want to stay updated, but we don’t want the news to worry the kids too much.

3. Talk About Storms

It’s important to talk to your kids about hurricanes using words they can understand. It’s important to stay calm to help them feel safe and secure. There are several resources you can use to help explain. We recommend National Geographic Kids.

4. Stick to a Routine

Try to stick to our normal routine as much as possible. It might be a bit tough, but it’ll help the kids feel more at ease during the storm.
