What if Lightning Strikes your Home? With hurricane season among us, it’s important to be prepared for all possibilities. We know that storms can cause all sorts of damage, even the rarest possibilities of lightning. So what do you do if it strikes your home? Here are some steps to take. First, it’s important to know the signs of a lightning strike to your home. Most obviously, the sound can be overwhelmingly loud. Your home may shake, and the intensity can be enough to destabilize stone/brick or the overall structure of your home.
Check for fire or smoke
If you notice any signs of fire – smoke, smell, etc.- immediately evacuate. It is a greater risk to stay in your home during the start of a fire than to go outside in the storm. Since lightning wants to travel to the ground, it will travel from the strike spot through your electrical wires to get there. This results in the biggest being a fire sparking. It is extremely likely to happen if your home is struck.
Call 911/ fire department
Call 911 or the Fire Department as soon as possible, even if you do not suspect any signs of fire. Lightning-induced fires can begin in hidden places that only experts can detect.
Call your insurance agency
Once you and your family are stabilized after the storm passes, make sure to call your insurance agency. It’s important to access your claims process as soon as possible.
Call an electrician
If your home is still in stable condition, the next step to take is to call an electrician. It’s essential to have an expert evaluate your wiring and ensure that everything is still functioning properly. This is important for future safety and fire prevention.
