Manatee Appreciation Day is celebrated annually during the month of March. We have lots of information on where you can visit these gentle marine mammals across the state of Florida. Unfortunately, manatees have been listed as an endangered species and later as “threatened”. From 2021 to 2022, about 2,000 manatees died in Florida due to water pollution killing the seagrass they consume for food. This day is all about appreciating and raising awareness for these beautiful creatures.
Make it your goal to visit manatees this spring! Here are some great spots to find them:
Manatees can usually be found in the waters of Florida throughout the warmer months but move towards Florida Springs when it gets a bit colder. This is because they need somewhere where the temperatures will remain constant throughout the year.
Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River
At Three Sisters Springs, manatees come in large numbers. You will surely get to see them here! Visitors often take a boat or kayak tour to get a full view of the area. You can expect to see up to 100 manatees throughout your tour! This location is a popular one, so be mindful of the crowds. Blue Heaven River Tours is just down the road if you want to escape the larger crowds of your visit!
TECO(Tampa Electric’s Manatee Viewing Center), Apolla Beach
This location is a designated manatee sanctuary. Hundreds of manatees return here during the winter to live in the warm waters of the Big Bend Power Station. You’ll have plenty of chances to see the sea cows from walkways and designated viewing platforms across the facility.
Blue Spring State Park, Orange City
Blue Springs Park has several overlooks and boardwalks to give you the best view of the manatees. No boats or tours are needed to have the experience you’re looking for! You can simply explore the park and see the beautiful creatures throughout.
The Boat Basin, Miami
The Boat Basin is found at The Deering Estate on Biscayne Bay. Manatees love to congregate here because of the fresh water and calm waters. It makes for a great spot to see manatees and other sea animals such as sharks, turtles, and sometimes dolphins!
Lee County Manatee Park, Fort Myers
Manatee Park is another great spot to see manatees throughout the winter months. The sea cowls will be here in large amounts that can be seen from various viewing areas. You can surely make a day out of being in the park to see manatees, explore the butterfly garden, and picnic for lunch!
We hope you get a chance to see some manatees this season! Thank you for recognizing this day with us as we admire and bring awareness to these lovely creatures of Florida.
