Throughout our homes, hundreds of things require replacement throughout the months, but we may not be paying enough attention to all the items needing an update. Things like light bulbs and batteries receive the attention they need without a second thought, but what about kitchen appliances, bathroom cleaning tools, and other items that wear out quietly?
Here’s a simple guide to how often you should replace some of the most commonly overlooked home items—and the signs it’s time to let them go.
Replace every: 7–10 years
Microwaves are built to last, but they slowly lose efficiency over time. If your food heats unevenly, takes longer than it used to, or the door doesn’t seal properly, it may be time for a replacement.
Replace sooner if:
The door won’t close securely
Buttons stop responding
You notice sparks, burning smells, or loud noises
Replace every: 6–8 years
Crumbs, grease, and heating elements take a toll on toasters. Older models can also become a fire hazard.
Replace sooner if:
Toast cooks unevenly
The lever sticks
You see frayed cords or smell burning
Replace every: 1–2 weeks
Kitchen sponges are one of the dirtiest items in your home, harboring bacteria even when they look clean.
Tip:
If you want a longer-lasting option, switch to silicone scrubbers or dish brushes, which are easier to sanitize.
Replace every: 1–2 years
Bath mats absorb moisture daily, making them a breeding ground for mold and mildew—especially those with rubber backing.
Replace sooner if:
The backing cracks or peels
It smells musty even after washing
Mold stains won’t come out
Replace every:
Nonstick pans: 3–5 years
Stainless steel: 10+ years
Cast iron: Can last a lifetime with proper care
Replace nonstick cookware immediately if:
The coating is scratched, peeling, or flaking
Food sticks despite proper use
Replace every: 10 years
Smoke detectors have an expiration date—even if they still beep when tested.
Important reminders:
Replace batteries once a year
Test alarms monthly
Write the install date on the back so you don’t forget
Replace every: 6 months
Even with regular cleaning, toilet brushes collect bacteria and wear down quickly.
Replace sooner if:
Bristles bend or break
The brush retains odor
The holder collects grime or mold
Replacing household items on schedule keeps your home cleaner, safer, and more efficient. A good rule of thumb: if something touches food, moisture, or germs regularly, it likely needs replacing more often than you think. As a new season begins, it’s a good reminder to do an overall assessment of your home items, and make the necessary changes as you go.
