Know Your Rights and Fight Fraud
Insurance fraud is a serious issue in Florida. It’s important to be aware of it and how to prevent it. Knowing your rights is key to protecting yourself and your property. Some signs of insurance fraud include suspicious or questionable billing practices, inflated repair estimates, and offers of kickbacks or discounts for not reporting an incident. If you think you may be a victim of insurance fraud, contact your local law enforcement agency or the Florida Department of Insurance.
Find Trustworthy & Licensed Florida Contractors
Finding reliable and trusted contractors when you have damage to your home can be a difficult task, but it’s essential to get the best possible outcome. Before you hire a contractor, ensure they have a license and check their reviews on Google or Better Business Bureau. Additionally, it’s also a great practice to ask the contractor for proof of licensing and insurance. By taking these steps, you can guarantee you are hiring a reliable and trusted contractor to get the job done.

Read Contracts Carefully:
- Be wary of any document that contains language such as “I agree to transfer or assign any and all insurance rights, benefits, and causes of action under my property insurance policy to the contractor.” This type of document is called an “Assignment of Benefits” or “AOB”, and signing it could mean that you give away many of your rights under your insurance policy.
- A “Direction to Pay” is not the same as an “Assignment of Benefits”. A “Direction to Pay” does not assign your rights to the contractor, it merely permits the insurance company to make payments for completed services directly to the contractor on your behalf.
